Canadian Dental Care Plan for Seniors

What Is the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP)?

The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is something truly amazing  a federal government program that’s all about knocking down those pesky financial barriers that stop people from getting the dental care they need. It was put together by Health Canada and Sun Life working together to give people who don’t have private dental insurance or workplace benefits a helping hand.

With this brilliant plan, eligible Canadians get the coverage they need for all sorts of oral health care services, and it’s all based on their adjusted family net income. You won’t have to jump through hoops or fill out loads of paperwork, our friendly team will be right there with you every step of the way at our welcoming West Kelowna dental home.

You’ll love that you don’t have to change your dentist either. Whether you’re already part of our dental family or just stepping through our doors for the first time, we’re more than happy to have CDCP patients on board and we feel really honoured to be a part of this life-changing program.

Dental Services Covered by Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP)

The dental coverage you’ll receive through the CDCP depends on your household income, eligibility status, and the treatment that will support your smile. Here’s a warm overview of the services covered under this caring plan:

Preventive Dental Care (Often Covered at 100%)

These services are often fully covered to support long-term oral health and prevent more serious issues down the road.

Basic Dental Services

  • Fillings
  • Extractions
  • Emergency care
  • Scaling and root planing
  • Minor restorations

These are commonly used treatments that are partially or fully covered depending on your CDCP participation and co payment tier.

Major Dental Services

While not all major services are included in every plan, CDCP cover for these treatments is available to many patients, especially when medically necessary. Our team will help you understand if your plan includes these essential dental services.

Note: Cosmetic dentistry (like veneers or whitening) typically isn’t covered under the CDCP, but we offer flexible financing options for these treatments.

  • Use Your Preventive Visits
Preventive services like exams and cleanings are typically fully covered. Booking your next dental appointment now helps protect your smile and your wallet.
  • Know Your Annual Limits
Like most dental insurance programs, the CDCP has annual coverage limits. We’ll help track them for you.
  • Avoid the Rush
Many patients wait until the end of the year to schedule care, which can lead to delays. Don’t wait, book early to reserve your preferred time.
  • Check Your Deductible
Your co payment and any out of pocket costs may be lower once you’ve met your plan’s deductible.

FAQs

To qualify for the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) you need to have been a Canadian resident for tax purposes last year, filed your tax return from the previous year and your adjusted family net income has to be under the program’s limit (that’s usually under $90,000). You also can’t have any access to private dental insurance. The plan is currently available to seniors over 65, kids under 18, and adults with a valid Disability Tax Credit certificate.

The CDCP helps pay for lots of the really important stuff; exams, cleanings, x-rays, fillings, extractions, root canals, crowns, dentures and even some oral surgery services when they’re needed. Exactly what’s covered and how much the government chips in will depend on the specifics of the plan.

You apply for the CDCP through the online application portal run by Health Canada or your My Service Canada Account. After you submit your application it should take a few months to get a welcome package in the mail, including your membership card, a rundown on your coverage and when your coverage starts.

The amount the CDCP covers works out based on your adjusted family net income. If you’re below a certain income threshold you can get a percentage of your dental costs covered, that could be 100%, 60% or 40% of the CDCP’s established fees. You may still have to pay a little extra on top of that in the way of co-pays and any fees the CDCP doesn’t cover.

Unfortunately not, the CDCP won’t cover things like teeth whitening. It’s focused on the essential dental care you need to keep your mouth healthy. We do offer some flexible options for cosmetic treatments though, outside of what the plan covers.

If you’re covered under a family member’s employer benefits, pension benefits, or other private dental insurance, you may not qualify for the CDCP. Be sure to cancel any existing insurance or benefits company plans before enrolling.

If you’re still enrolled in a previous employer’s plan or have access to health and wellness accounts, you may need to opt out or use those first. We’ll help you determine your CDCP participation status and avoid duplicate coverage.
