Porcelain Inlays & Onlays Near You

Contemporary dentistry is truly a blessing; patients can address a large array of problems concerning their smiles like tooth decay, receding gums, and sensitivity.

One treatment that you might want to explore further if you’re looking to restore your smile and regain optimal oral health is inlays and onlays. Similar to traditional dental fillings, this process helps reduce discomfort and heals teeth that have been weakened by cavities.

Here at our neighborhood dental office, we offer this service to all our patients. Reach out to our dentist in West Kelowna to learn more.

Porcelain Inlays & Onlays in West Kelowna

What are They?

Inlays

Dentists use inlays to address decay or other damage that’s occurred at the center of the tooth. An inlay is made from a solid material like gold, porcelain, or composite resin, and is bonded to the tooth with dental cement. Inlays are designed to fit snugly within the grooves that reside on the chewing surfaces of the tooth.

Onlays

An onlay is a larger type of restoration that is used to repair more extensive damage, such as a large cavity or a crack. Onlays are made from the same materials as inlays and are adhered on the top of the tooth with dental cement as well.

To determine whether this method is right for you, book a consultation with a dentist near you. They will conduct a comprehensive evaluation of your oral cavity to fully understand your situation. If necessary, they may take a series of x-rays to see if there’s any harm below the surface of your gums. Should you have questions or concerns about any part of the treatment, be sure to let your dentist know about it.

The Process

Getting inlays or onlays requires at least two sessions.

For your first visit, an impression of the affected tooth is taken to create a custom-fitted restoration. A temporary restoration is placed on the tooth to protect it in the meantime. During your follow-up visit, the temporary covering is removed, the final inlay or onlay is fitted and bonded in place, and then the tooth is fully polished.

It’s important to maintain good oral hygiene and regular dental checkups and cleanings after your treatment; otherwise, you might need to receive more extensive and invasive care in the future.
