What’s Involved in a Checkup and Cleaning?
Routine checkups and cleanings are frequently combined into a single visit, which involves the steps described below:
Exam:
- Dental/medical history review – Your dentist will talk to you and review your past medical and dental situations to understand your current health and determine if any such condition or medication may affect the health of your smile.
- Visual checkup – The dentist will physically inspect the entirety of your oral cavity including your teeth, gums, and tongue, for signs of decay, gum disease, or other issues.

- Flossing – The hygienist will floss between your teeth and along the gumline to remove any remaining plaque or debris.
- Fluoride treatment – Fluoride, be it a varnish, gel, or foam, is applied to your teeth to strengthen the enamel and prevent decay.
